Healthy Habits™ is a step-by-step program designed to help you get and stay slim by
combining psychology, behavior modification, Neuro-Linguistic Programming along with the
American Dietetic Association's eating guide. Healthy Habits™ will help you uncover
hidden reasons that may have prevented you from losing weight in the past.
For example: In Workshop "Week #1: Your Commitment to Change," we ask you
to focus on the positive intentions associated with being overweight. Many people
continue to stay overweight despite their sincere efforts to slim down.
Positive intentions are an attempt to protect yourself, take care of yourself, or to meet
some need. Appreciate that there is an unconscious part of your mind that is using
excess weight or overeating for some positive purpose. Here are some examples:
- Excess weight wards-off unwanted attention from the opposite sex.
- It provides an excuse to reduce, eliminate, or shirk a responsibility.
- It is another way to say “no.”
- It is a way to express anger.
- It feels like a protective shield from real or supposed dangers.
- It means you don’t have to compete with others who look beautiful.
- It means good health, if you think that thin people are sickly.
- It promotes modesty and humility.
- It prevents others from feeling jealous of your looks.
- It means people will like you for reasons other than your looks.
Some unconscious purposes of overeating are:
- Overeating provides momentary comfort and distraction from uncomfortable emotions such
as anger, loneliness, nervousness, guilt, sadness and stress.
- Overeating is a way of being sociable and fitting in with others.
- It is something to do when you are bored.
On pages 40 to 42 of Healthy Habits: Total Conditioning for a Healthy Body & Mind we
give you three examples of women who used overeating and excess weight for unconscious
purposes. Amy became heavy so her husband would stop acting jealous and possessive.
Gloria used her excess weight to ward-off the unwanted flirtations and sexual interest of men.
Babette used weight to express anger toward her mother, who was overly concerned and critical
about Babette’s physical appearance.
